Which Types of Fences Are Best For a Farm?

Whether you own a couple of acres or a few hundred hectares, you can understand the importance of high quality protective fencing on your farming block.

If you have livestock such as sheep, cattle and goats, hold expensive agricultural equipment or you’re simply growing some vegetable/fruit crops, installing the right type of rural fencing will ensure your farming block is kept safe and operating smoothly at all times.

Depending on the exact purpose for your farm fencing requirements, we can help determine the most suitable one for your needs.  Let’s look at the different types available and how it can benefit your rural property.

TIMBER POST & RAIL FENCING

Timber fencing is up there as one of the best options for farm fencing. If regularly maintained, painted and looked after properly, you can expect a solid timber fence to last in excess of 20 + years.

Although not the first choice for use in larger pastures, it’s still a great alternative for smaller paddocks - where animals can easily be separated.

Furthermore, it’s also an excellent option as boundary fencing, either for the front or sides of the property - providing adequate demarcation lines between farming blocks. At AGCON Solutions, we are leaders in timber post fencing for a range of agricultural settings.

ELECTRIC FENCING

Electric wire fencing may not be the most aesthetically pleasing to look at but its ability to deter livestock from escaping your property is priceless. All it takes is that one brush up against the fence to feel that uncomfortable electrical spark.

Although not dangerous, it’s enough to keep your livestock fearful of touching it again. This also applies to predators that may be lurking around and is a useful way to ‘keep them out’.

At AGCON Solutions, we use a combination of horizontal wires and vertical stakes to create top quality electric fencing that can’t be messed around with.

You can choose to have the top part of the fence or the entire wire mesh electrified, depending on your personal circumstances. If you have larger livestock like bulls or horses, it may be worthwhile to install electric fencing to protect your neighbour’s property; as well as using it as a preventative tool to ensure your livestock remain inside their respectful boundary.

BARBED WIRE FENCING

Barbed wire fencing is very common on rural properties and is one of the best for keeping cattle safe and protected. Our team at AGCON can design this type of fencing using up to 3 strands of woven wire, with sharp barbs inserted as a deterrent for curios and feisty animals.

In our experience, we find barbed wire fencing to be highly effective at containing larger animals on bigger paddocks.

Of course, there’s still a risk of animals escaping if they want to, but we often find this is not as prevalent in the farming community. If you’re considering a more affordable and protective option for your fencing needs, barbed wire is the way to go.

PLAIN WIRE FENCING

Plain wire fencing offers some great benefits for smaller fields and paddocks. Whether you’re containing cattle, pigs or horses, we can install extra strength wire fencing using a heavier gauge wire to keep your livestock safe.

With a variety of options available, you can choose from Woven Fencing for extra reinforcement, Fixed Knot Fencing designed from both directions or Hinge Joint Knot fencing that utilises both horizontal and vertical allocations.
